Engineering in High School
Engineering in High School
Engineering in High School is a three-year national development program consisting of a range of opportunities for teachers and students across the country.
The purpose of the project is to implement the engineering approach in science education at HTX and STX schools across Denmark. The goal is to strengthen teachers’ didactic competencies and thereby boost students’ motivation for science and technology subjects.
Over the course of the project, science teachers from 25 upper secondary schools will take part in continuing education in the engineering approach, gaining tools to make their teaching more open-ended, problem-solving oriented, and student-centered. The project aims to enhance teachers’ ability to create learning experiences that are more application-oriented and connected to real-world contexts.
The engineering approach also calls for a shift in the teacher’s role. Rather than providing all the answers, the teacher acts as a guide and facilitator. Students are encouraged to explore knowledge independently, to experiment and observe, and to engage in innovation and prototype development.
In addition to interdisciplinary courses for teachers at the 25 participating high schools, the project also includes the development of subject-specific courses in collaboration with the five national science teacher associations.
To support teachers' professional development, the project will also develop engineering-specific didactics tailored to the upper secondary level, along with a range of supporting resources - including video materials, method cards, ready-to-use engineering modules, and an annual engineering event.
During the project period, at least 400 teachers will either participate in a course or complete one of the project’s professional development programs. Additionally, 14,000 students will complete an engineering module or take part in an engineering event.
